Small Hive Beetle - Larvae Stage

Small Hive Beetle – Larvae Stage

The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, has been reported in honey bee colonies in New Brunswick. These honey bee colonies were imported from Ontario. Samples were taken on 3 June and 4 June, 2017 by me and Fletcher Colpitts. Specimens were forwarded to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and were confirmed to be the small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray.

The location of the infested colonies is: Gloucester County, New Brunswick. The nearest community is Saumarez, New Brunswick.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and all the Provincial Apiarists have been notified of this report.

New Brunswick departmental staff are currently spot checking other Ontario colonies in the area and are also determining if local NB hives are located in the vicinity.  Next steps will be determined following this exercise.
